Profile - Mason & Taylor

As the old saying doesn’t go (but probably should): “If you want diversity, head to East London”. It has cockneys, hipsters and everything in between. And, since 2010 it also has one of London’s most diverse beer ranges available from the excellent Mason & Taylor. Setup by Ed Mason & Steve Taylor, it is committed to selling only the best beer from around the globe, and, fortunately this includes BrewDog.

Sitting on Bethnal Green Road between Shoreditch High Street and the top of Brick Lane, and set out over two floors, Mason & Taylor feels like a fusion between pub and bar. It has a stripped back feel to it with huge glass frontage more reminiscent of a bar, but equally it generates the warmth & character that you associate with a pub. In no way is this better illustrated by the fact that Mason & Taylor has quickly become a renowned drinking hotspot for beer aficionados whilst at the same time building up a reputation for late night shenanigans in their basement bar area. In fact, this basement area doubles up nicely as an arena for beer launches and it was here that we decided to launch the 2012 IPA is Dead series in London with all four IPAs available on keg and in bottle. I think the fact that we managed to get 80 people through the door on that cold Monday evening in April is evidence of the great craft beer following that they attract.

And so to those beers then - The bottled beer list changes every 3 months in order to keep it fresh and there always seems to be some different beers on draft from the likes of Dark Star, Brodies, Camden & Magic Rock, as well as some awesome US breweries. As a friend of Brewdog pretty much since opening we’re pleased to say that Mason & Taylor almost always dedicate one draft line to our beers, alternating between Punk, 5AM, Hardcore & Dogma, and we’ll even occasionally give them something a little bit rare if they’ve been nice to us!
It’s a great example of what a modern pub can be like, and it is perhaps unsurprising that it emerged in the vibrant East End of London. Here at Brewdog we are big fans and we plan to do several more events there over the next year so keep an eye out on twitter and the blog for details.

- A lot of bars can learn how to treat customers like they do at Mason and Taylor. Streets ahead for service and knowledge about their products.
