Shape BrewDog's Future Beer Range

As well as brewing hardcore craft ales and getting ourselves into a little trouble occasionally another key cornerstone of the BrewDog philosophy is trying to shorten the distance as much as possible between ourselves and you – the people who drink our beers. We love you guys (individually and collectively) and we want to involve you as much as we can in all aspects of our business. Hell if it was not for you guys, we would not even have a business.

So, we felt it was only right to get your feedback as we put together our plans for what we are going to brew next year. Since you are going to help us drink it, it is only fair that you help us decide what we brew.

The structure of our range and current brewery means that we have 5 beers in our core range. These are 5 beers which are permanently available and available to all markets and customers in all formats.  The 2011 core range was Trashy Blonde, 77 Lager, 5am Saint, Punk IPA and Hardcore IPA.

That is not to say we do not brew other things, of course we do. We will always make specials, Abstrakts, high ABV beers and prototypes when we have the chance. But our capacity constraints means, we can only commit to having 5 beers in our core range which are (almost) always available.

So the killer question is – what 5 BrewDog beers would you like to be in the core range for 2012?

Take any 5 from our present, past, occasional, collaborative or seasonal line up and post the 5 beer names below. They have to be actual beers we have made though, and not new beer ideas this time. We will post another blog with the amalgamated results based on your comments and unveil our 2012 core range!

  • I echo sentiments of using your sales data to determine the best. If there is one beer that is lagging behind the rest, nominate that as the drop then ask for replacements given the other 4. This might get you better data from consumers as well. If had to choose though

    4. Ingrid (if this is too expensive/tricky to brew as a core then Citra sigle hop IPA is dead)
    5. Riptide

    I would love to go for a stronger dark beer like the fantastic AB:04 or a Paradox but can't see beers at this price on Supermarket shelves at this point and I guess this is where the core range has to be to attract new customers to the brand - once you've got them hooked then they can buy the more specialist stuff from your website! That is how you got me hooked a few years back...

    2. Paradox - A big stout that is well crafted and can be done in both neutral and barrelled treatments. Tokyo* is a great alternative but overpriced for the core range.

    3. 5am Saint - A balanced, hoppy amber ale that sits nicely as a standard strength offering.

    4. Bashah - A wonderful and unique beer. Hardcore also works but is similar to so many other beers in the marketplace.

    5. Trashy Blonde - I think you need something in there that is approachable to the masses and Trashy is that beer without being a relatively simple lager like 77.

    I hardcore U, Like a punsch in the face(in a good way)

    Citra, Is the only one of the IPA is dead I can really remember and I also can't get enough of that citrus hops nomnomnom.

    5 AM Saint, a bread and butter beer. So very drinkable.

    Those are the four I really care about, Ingrid was got but mostly becouse I'm Swede I think. Hardcore is also nice but if you get I hardcore u it's not needed. For the other of your beers I've tried they have a really small public accept trashy Blonde so I guess thats my choise for 5th.

    Trashy Blonde also it's Eco which I like...

  • It is interesting to see that what people prefer, Personally, i would like all the 5 beers to be beers with real personality. This would mean that the only one that needs to be replaced is 77 lager. I think it tastes too much like "oridnary beers". Replace it with bitch please, nanny state or just about anything else that makes brewdog stand out from the crowd.

  • The only discernible omission from your core range is a permanent stout/porter. I know 8% Riptide is still available in supermarkets and I've tried the 4% on cask which IMHO didn't really have the WOW factor I'd expect from a BrewDog beer...I would still bump Trashy Blonde for a kickass Stout though:

  • Hate to be a stick in the mud but here goes:
    IMHO it doesn't make business sense to change the core offer from year to year. Keep the core, unless you experience dwindling sales of some offering. Add more to the core, if possible. A no-brainer(unless business figures show otherwise) would pe a Porter/Stout perhaps an Imperial variety. I am not too keen on lagers, and the 77 seems to me our weakest player, but if it sells well, by all means keep it. It is probably a good entrance to the Brewdog universe for lager fans.

    I think the quirk of dogma over 5am saint, and my desire for a) paradox and b) a dark beer in general in the core range would be ace. Obviously the blonde is a good cask shout- but could you cask up dogma/paradox..? But, that would be my dream lineup.

    To contextualise, I'm Brazilian, and depending on the weather it gets harder to appreciate a stronger beer, so I don't take lightly my suggestion that you guys darken up and toughen up your all-star line-up.

    Nevertheless, I keep a browser tab open at Tarantino's tumblr in order to know first hand when your beer arives. I got my friends hooked on your beer, and taught my mamma how to cook with them and pair them with food.

    One of my best pals complains a lot about how few dark craft beers make it to Brazil (and how expensive they wind up being), and I hear 'im. We need more Porters and Stouts (and also more local breweries scratching this itch themselves).

    Hope to see more stuff from you guys coming our way across the pond. Cheers!

    (1) Though I'm suggesting Rip Tide without having tried it. It's the only time in this list I'm doing that, and it's because I trust those who have.
    (2) I personally prefer Paradox, but I've been told that's because I'm a wuss.

    I think this is fairly balanced...don't think you can get rid of your lager as its a useful tool for dragging in previous non brewdog drinkers but i don't think they should all be pale need some dark beers in there and hardcore ipa won't be entirely lost as it will still be widely available through the tesco american double ipa

  • I think somegthing 'dark' should be in there - unless sales show dark beers don't hold there own. I'm often surprised more folk like lighter brews. I'd drop Trashy Blond and stick Dogma in there - it's probably more with the ethos than Riptide, though it is also excellent...and as for Paradox, well...
    I'm least impressed by 77 lager - it is a great pilsner lager, but dare I say it's like most other pilsner lagers - but probably key to hooking some otherwise none BrewDog drinkers so propbably sells well.

    Tough to choose, especially between Alice and Rip Tide (the beer that I first fell in love with) but I've always found Trashy and Punk to be a bit meh. Ingrid was a stunning beer. This could all change as I've got a dozen Hops Kill sitting in the house, but that's the beauty of what you do - even if you have a core range, there's always something else interesting brewing away.

    Trashy Blonde and 77 Lager are nice but not earth shattering. Zeitgeist didn't do much for me.

    And yes, I've controversially left Punk out of that list. Had an awful lot of exposure, but I think Hardcore is a far better drink and stands alone, whereas there are plenty of brewers trying to emulate Punk bitterness at that alcohol level.

    Not sure where Tokyo* and Alice Porter would fall with Paradox in the range. For a lighter alternative keep Alice and make Tokyo* a special.

    Not had Ingrid or HKN but they could be amazing hence my rather vague last choice :)

    I hardcore you - best dipa to be brewed in this country (hardcore as an alternative as 'i hardcore you' isn't a sole brewdog effort, speak to your pal at mikkeller about getting this as a permo. Imagine it, I hardcore you available all year round, sainsbos, tescos, sweeden all the shit)

    Whatever you decide to do, forget about 77 and trashy, too many better beers of their styles already on the market. Not saying they're bad or anything, just not top of their league.

  • Whoa! That's a tricky question! Never had a bad BD beer so the choice is vast.

    Punk is a no brainer; Hardcore is my first choice; I'm not a lager fan but many are, so 77 seems obvious. Paradox was my introduction to BD and is superb, but best left as an occasional [BTW, when will we see some more?]. So I'd go for Alice as a regular. Citra was great but maybe Trashy or 5AM are sufficiently 'established' to make one of them the final choice?
