#MASHTAG 2019 DAY ONE: THE BEER STYLE

#MashTag is back. This is beer chosen by the people, for the people.

Every year we invite our community to take part in the ultimate vote to decide on a brand new beer. You pick everything, from style to malt to hops to twist – even the label design! Seeing as you’re the people drinking our beer, it’s only fair you choose what goes in it too. Here’s how #MashTag week will work.

From today (02/09/2019) until Friday we will post a blog at 10am every morning. It will list four options for you to choose from, with each day giving you a new element of the beer to decide on. You and your fellow BrewDog drinkers will be in sole charge of selecting the direction #MashTag 2019 takes.

A social vote will go up on our Facebook, Twitter and Instagram profiles where you can have your say on what goes into our 2019 brew.

As a reminder, our 2018 winner was a 5% yuzu & hibiscus infused pale ale. What will the polls reveal this year?

Let’s get mashing! Read on for the breakdown of votes each day this week:

Monday: Beer Style

Tuesday: Malt Bill & ABV

Wednesday: Hops & IBU

Thursday: Special Twist

Friday: The Label

Voting is open from 10am - 6pm each day, apart from Friday (art takes time, so our label design challenge has a longer deadline). We’ll tally up all the votes across the different platforms each evening, and every blog post from tomorrow onwards will include the results from the day before. Without further ado – it’s time for the first of those selection dilemmas:

Day One: Beer Style

For #MashTag 2019, the beer styles you can choose from are:

Pale Ale/Bitter

Pale, bitter beer changed the world when it appeared in the mid-19th Century. Enormously drinkable and with a tingle of bitterness the style jumped the Atlantic and morphed into the hop-forward pales of the USA. Sharing a backbone of Pale Malt, they are a perfect canvas for this latest #MashTag journey. This was the winning style last year in 2018, will it reign supreme once again?

IPA

One of the most beloved styles of the craft beer world, the pale ale’s hopped up cousin is a guaranteed crowd pleaser. IPA is a style synonymous with American craft beer, often showcasing an assertive hop character that could easily stand up strong when faced with fruit or flavour twists.

Stout

Switching to the dark side, the third potential style for #MashTag 2019 is stout. There are a myriad of dark and roasted malts out there and they all give a brilliantly warming and rewarding stout with near limitless variations on a direction it could take next. But that’s up to you…

Barley Wine

We end on another throwback. Full and intense, barley wines (or barleywines; either is cool) have an increased malt bill to yield higher gravities, which in turn gives you a rich, resonant beer that can be anything from golden amber to deepest brown. Another great potential start for #MashTag. Our 2015 #MashTag brew was a barley wine, let’s see if this style returns for another crown 4 years on!

So to summarise, this year’s #MashTag release will be either a Pale Ale/Bitter, an IPA, a Stout or a Barley Wine. Each style offers a wildly different beer so think carefully about what you want to drink before you cast your vote!
