Anyone who longs for a return to the times of the Incas and Aztecs when chilies were used as currency is in for a treat this week; our latest dual-beer release is one for the spice-heads. Both feature the fiery fruiting pods in abundance, but from two very different approaches. The first has a companion along for the ride – a complementary addition of tropical fruit. The second is our Capsaicin showcase that detonates a trio of chilies against our ruthless IPA.

Yes, Neon Overlord and Chili Hammer are out now.

We begin with a beer that actually has been out there for a while. We released Neon Overlord in recipe form as part of DIY Dog months before we first brewed it – so hopefully a few daring homebrewers have had a go and produced the first ever batches already. Ours is also ready, and it features a fusillade of Centennial, Columbus, Mosaic and Citra hops crashing against Habanero Chili, Mangoes and Coriander Seed.

The result is one of the most complex brews we have ever compiled. First there is a hit of mango, tropical fruit and Turkish delight, before the toffee edges from the malt bill arrive – we ramped up the pale ale malt baseline to support all of the other ingredients, yielding enough fermentable sugars to get Neon Overlord to 7.3% ABV. But the finish is all chili. It arrives slowly at first, but builds and rises to a brutally brilliant, mouth-coating crescendo.

Neon Overlord is the latest in our series of small-batch can exclusives, and to mark its release we have dialled in an epic Neon Overlord t-shirt in our online store. In fact, Florian Schommer’s artwork looked so cool we have also issued it as a limited-edition screen print!

Launching alongside we have another beer perfect for the recent high-voltage weather. The third Hammer Head has seen our resident chili-fiend Franz let loose and turn Jack Hammer into a savage alter-ego of its former self. Previous BrewDog chili beers have used dried pods in the fermenter, but today’s two releases have had powdered chili added to the whirlpool; the input of heat from the wort corresponding to more heat down the line.

Chili Hammer twists into a new direction with the addition of Habanero, Scotch Bonnet and Trinidad Scorpion, and is then dry-hopped as usual to give a hint of balance courtesy of grapefruit, lemon and pineapple. These citrus and tropical fruit flavours give a bitter finish to the beer, before the arrival of the punchy, spiky chili heat. It is a true departure for our resinous piledriver, and a fitting addition to our Hammer Heads series (look out for the final release, Rye Hammer, in December).

Both of these beers are red hot in our online shop right now and will be in our UK bars on draught from 6pm tonight, Thursday 15th September. Head along to your nearest BrewDog bar and give your tastebuds a workout. If you see our Franz there, he’ll be first in the queue…
