BREWDOG vs SCOFFLAW
From Atlanta to Aberdeen – Double A is here…
At the start of last month we welcomed yet another epic brewery to our Ellon HQ for a meeting of minds over the mash tun. One of the hottest breweries in the US right now are the pride of Atlanta, Scofflaw Brewing Company. Matt and Travis made the long journey from the Peach State to Aberdeenshire so we hooked up on a beer style all of us know and love.
We have a kick-ass Double IPA for you. Double A is out now.
Double A - BrewDog vs Scofflaw
Scofflaw are mighty when it comes to pale ales, but in a city with an average summer temperature of 32°C that’s maybe not surprising. (It’s also why we brew a lot of stouts in Aberdeen). Despite launching less than two years ago Matt and Travis have already made huge waves for the quality of their pale ales, leading with their flagship IPA Basement, harking back to how they came to life.
Named after the location in which it was first created, the pair started out on a one-barrel kit underneath the house of Matt’s mother in law. Worried that visitors would be concerned about the Breaking Bad-levels of hissing steam and metallic clanking going on there, she would cover the basement windows. Matt and Travis would be ensconced inside, brewing away undisturbed.
Since they emerged to found their brewery, Scofflaw have gone from strength to strength – we had a blast brewing with them in Aberdeen (no curtains in Ellon). Riffing on the nickname for Atlanta (‘The A’) – we added a second A courtesy of our home city and then doubled up a pale ale into a kick-ass 9.5% ABV Double IPA.
There is no messing around with this one; Double A is a down-the-pipes DIPA – big hits of resin, pine and grapefruit courtesy of Simcoe, Chinook, Centennial, Citra, Comet and Cascade hops. 70 IBU with a five-strong dry hop schedule, the beer has a driving bitterness to pair with that sticky resin. A shadow of toastiness from the Pale, Munich and Cara Red malt offsets the huge hop profile. But only a little. Double A is an aggressive, classic Double IPA.
Double A is live in our online shop right now and will be pouring from the taps of our UK Bars from 6pm tonight, Thursday 24th May. It is yet another epic collaboration and the perfect way in which to welcome another sunny bank holiday weekend.
