Let the tasting commence!

Three months have passed since we partnered with Tesco to launch the ultimate homebrewing contest that is #HomeBrewDog, and as the closing date for entries has been and gone we figured it was a great chance to update everyone on the competition so far, the number of entries we have received – and for the hundreds of you who took the time to send us your craft-brewed creations, what exactly will happen next. Well, the short answer there is that we have some drinking to do.

Ladies and gentlemen, prepare to be judged!

To recap, #HomeBrewDog was created to be the supreme challenge of homebrewing skill, mirroring the history of our company with James and Martin sweeping the board at a Tesco homebrew competition back in 2008 (which sure seems like a long time ago). To reflect this, the quest to find that next level of homebrewing talent carries with it some truly life-changing prizes:-

- The winner will receive an all-expenses paid trip to our Ellon HQ to re-brew their beer.
- It will be launched into our online shop and as an exclusive listing in Tesco.
- The beer will be launched on draft across our network of UK bars.
- Our champion can host a launch event at any UK BrewDog bar (and pick the beer list).
- We will also send the victorious homebrewer a few bottles of their creation too!
- Oh, and we will offer the winning entrant a job at BrewDog in our brewing team.

So with a selection of prizes like that up for grabs, we are currently getting on with the next stage of the process – which is collating, sorting and uncapping the 260 entries received. That’s not a typo, we were deluged with beers from all corners, it really is a testament to the skill and enthusiasm of the homebrewing community that #HomeBrewDog was met with such an incredible response! So for each and every one of those 260, here’s what is happening next…

The beers are currently making their way through our taste panel – the very same route all BrewDog releases go before we determine they are ready to be released. Our sensory experts are sampling the entries following their storage in our climate-controlled warehouse, with the beers having been divided into a series of panels based on the style recorded on the entry sheets. A winner from each heat will progress to the final round, which will take place in the week of the 24th October.

That final will be judged by a world-leading panel of industry experts, chaired by our co-founders James and Martin alongside the legendary beer writer Pete Brown. The eventual winner will be chosen then, and the skilled brewer informed! We’ll then brew the winning beer in mid-November, to be packaged around a month later (depending on how long it needs to ferment and condition). The beer will then be in Tesco and our online shop sometime in early 2017.

We have been thrilled with the response to #HomeBrewDog – thanks to each and every one of the 260 hardworking homebrewers who took the time to brew and send to us one of their creations. We will keep everyone posted as to how the judging process continues, and stand by for the announcement of the winning beer – and the reveal of who brewed it – at the end of the month. Until then, time to hit the mash tun again?

For the benefit of Smokey123 and everyone else who entered - we have selected a winner, the final round of judging had some extremely good beers - so once we have let the lucky victor know we will put together a blog post about their entry and why it came out on top!

Sunstoneale - The numbers were randomly-generated, as we do with our taste panel samples! So no worries there :)

Something ain't right here. I had 466 for my entry number while one of my friends was in the 600's, and only 260 beers made it to the HQ?! Maybe 2600?))

Nice to see my beer in the photo there!
On the one hand I wish I'd have designed a label for it but maybe it was picked for the simple nature of it!
