BREWDOG AND THE COFFEE APOTHECARY

There are countless hidden gems in North-Eastern Scotland; the many BrewDog crewmembers who live and work in the area can attest to that. One of the best is located near the tiny village of Udny Green – since 2014 our staff have been detouring the five miles from Ellon to pick up amazing coffee and food from The Coffee Apothecary to supercharge their day’s work. Founded by Ali and Jonny Aspden, we love their focus on ethical sourcing, service and quality. Plus we really, really dig their coffee. So recently we did something extra special to support our local community, customers and BrewDog crew.

We have backed Ali and Jonny with the funding they needed to open another Coffee Apothecary – in our hometown of Ellon. Equity Punks – you score 5% discount off everything they offer too!

A former charity shop on the Square in Ellon is now home to the second branch of The Coffee Apothecary – the fruition of a project that started way back in December 2017. Alongside their laser focus on sourcing and serving coffee and food, Ali and Jonny share our philosophy of bringing down barriers. As with craft beer, coffee is undergoing a modern-day revolution; attitudes are changing as people discover the vast array of different flavours, regions and growers that are out there.

Mirroring our global search for hops, malt and other cornerstones of craft beer, the story of The Coffee Apothecary is one told around the world. Ali and Jonny met in Edinburgh but travelled together for three years until they arrived in Melbourne, Australia – one of the greatest cities for coffee on earth. Living there sparked something in them that led to this point, via an old post office/general store in Udny and now a charity shop in Ellon.

We have keyed into Ali and Jonny’s spirit of creating somewhere they would like to enjoy a coffee or a drink by fitting out the Ellon Coffee Apothecary with five taps, which in time will be pouring freshly-kegged BrewDog beer. Brewed less than a mile away this fits their ethos of local sourcing perfectly. Their ethically-sourced breakfast and lunch dishes are cooked every day with local free-range meat, organic veg from four miles away and eggs from a free-range chicken run down the road. Even the jam is made within five miles!

You can also rediscover your love of coffee with seasonal espresso blends and speciality coffees from a small-batch roastery working ethically to support farmers and growers’ co-operatives. We drink a lot of coffee, but Ali and Jonny have opened our eyes to things like the coffee tasting flight, or the paired pours to uncover differences serving method has on the outcome – the same roasted beans as filter and espresso, side by side. This is a new way of thinking about coffee, and we love them for it.

And we haven’t even mentioned the daily-made sourdough doughnuts either…
