BREWDOG HISTORY

OUR BEER JOURNEY SO FAR

Our biggest mission when we set up BrewDog was to make other people as passionate about great craft beer as we are. And that is still our biggest mission today.

2007

2007

Bored of flavourless lagers and stuffy ales, we decided to fix the sorry state of the UK beer market by brewing our own. We set up in Fraserburgh, got some scary bank loans and spent all our money on stainless steel. We brewed tiny batches, filled bottles by hand and sold beer at markets and out of the back of a van. But our main mission was to provoke a passion for great craft beer.

Things started getting crazy for us in 2008 and they’ve stayed crazy ever since. We masterminded the UK's strongest ever beer, Tokyo, resulting in a huge media storm and - if you believe the headlines - the downfall of Western civilisation. Despite this, we started exporting to Sweden, Japan and America, went on TV with Oz Clark and became Scotland’s largest independent brewery.

This was the year we launched our ‘anti-business’ business model: Equity for Punks. In a ground-breaking first, we offered people shares in BrewDog online and over 1,300 invested. We also continued to push boundaries by brewing the world's strongest ever beer - Tactical Nuclear Penguin - at 32%, aged a beer on a fishing boat and became the UK’s fastest-growing alternative brewer.

Opening our first craft beer bar in our home town of Aberdeen was a dream come true, and we were blown away by the response from our community. We held our first AGM for our Equity Punk shareholders, picked up the Gold Medal for Hardcore IPA at the World Beer Cup, and brewed a 55% abv beer packed in roadkill, fusing art, craft beer and taxidermy to make it the world's most expensive beer ever.

After the success of BrewDog Aberdeen, we opened bars in Edinburgh, Glasgow and Camden. In true BrewDog style we announced our arrival in the capital by driving down Camden High Street in a tank. We brewed a beer at the bottom of the ocean, dispensed a 28% abv beer from a modified deer's head and started building our eco-brewery. We also welcomed over 5,000 new shareholders, raising over £2.2m.

Our state-of-the-art eco-brewery opened its doors in Ellon, ready to brew more craft beer than ever before. We also opened six new BrewDog bars, launched the phenomenal Dead Pony Club and grew revenues by 95%, prompting The Sunday Times Fast Track 100 to name us the UK’s fastest growing food & drink company. Not bad considering we also projected ourselves naked onto the Houses of Parliament.

Equity For Punks III raised £4.25M, smashing crowdfunding records and welcoming almost 10,000 new investors. Meanwhile, we recorded Season 1 of our TV show ‘Brew Dogs’, featuring America’s best craft brewers. Back on this side of the pond, we opened our first international bar in Stockholm with a funeral for generic beer, and were flattered and bemused when a fake BrewDog bar opened in China.

Our mission to spread the passion for craft beer continued with the opening of 12 new BrewDog bars as far afield as Brazil and Japan, as well as our first BottleDog and the awesome DogTap at BrewDog HQ. We released 36 different BrewDog beers, unleashed Truck Norris on the world, hit the screens with a second season of Brew Dogs, and made headlines for sticking it to Russian Premier, Vladimir Putin.

We broke world records this year with the largest equity crowdfunding scheme in history, Equity For Punks IV. At our eco-brewery, we installed a kick-ass canning line and released the strongest canned ale in the world: Black Eyed King Imp. We also brewed 65 different beers, opened 17 new bars, filmed our third season of Brew Dogs and made plans for our biggest venture yet – BrewDog Columbus USA.

Over the course of the year our incredible team dialled in 82 different beers, launching fan favourites Elvis Juice and Jet Black Heart. But we didn’t stop at beer. We turned the spirits world upside down with the announcement of LoneWolf, our foray into small batch gin and vodka. Then, to prove our passion for the craft, we went ‘open source’ and shared our recipes for every beer we’ve ever made.

To celebrate a Decade of Dog, ten years since BrewDog came howling into the world, we rewrote the blueprint for 21st Century business with The Unicorn Fund. We’ve pledged to give away 20% of our profits every year: 10% to our awesome crew and 10% to charity. We also grew our global community to over 70,000 with Equity for Punks V, began brewing in Columbus, and announced plans for a BrewDog brewery in Brisbane, Australia. We rocked two AGMs, one 34-beer #CollabFest and hit the Sunday Times Fast Track 100 for a record sixth year in a row.
