Top Tips from our People Whisperer

Recently we caught up with the head of our QC department Fraser Gormley so the good doctor could explain the five pillars of quality that ensure our beer gets to your glass in the very best possible shape. That blog post inspired us to seek out other BrewDog crew members and pick their brains for a quintet of top tips. So for the next in the series our People Whisperer Nicolle Sinclair is on hand to talk about what it takes to join our team, and five ways to make us sit up and take notice…

And you can check out our latest vacancies here

1. Show your passion

“Our underlying mission is to make other people as passionate about great craft beer as we are. Show us you love beer, or if not that you love something which will then allow you to learn beer and grow to love it! You can do this in words or by other means – we always love homebrew samples for interviewees – I remember one that also included the recipe breakdown, a product launch plan and when they planned to brew it on the 100Hl kit. Bold, ambitious and driven!”

2. Don’t be normal

“At BrewDog we love things that are atypical. So when we do interviews for our vacancies they don’t run to a usual format, the questions that we ask aren’t in any way normal and we therefore don’t expect that answers to be so either. Normal is boring! We want to see your true character not a shield put up because of interview stresses. That’s why we take all of the stuffiness out of the interview situation – being generic doesn’t cut it around here so go for it!”

3. Don’t dress to impress

“When you head to BrewDog HQ for an interview, feel free to leave that suit on the peg at home. We want our candidates to come as they are! Be empowered to be yourself, so we can meet the true you. A lot of people fall into throwing on the suit, and then becoming a word processor who does not connect with what they are saying. By all means rock the smart look if you feel comfortable, but the lack of dress code may help you fully let us know why you love what you do and the company you want to work for.”

4. Bleed Ambition

“BrewDog was built on passion, ambition and sheer determination, and we need our future employees to embrace that mind-set to challenge the boundaries and blow shit up. For instance there’s an awesome person who now works for us who essentially said if we didn’t offer her the job she’d sit outside, with her nose pressed against the glass, until we hired her! She proved she could bring so much to the table with her skills and her passion for BrewDog to be successful.”

5. Show your face!

“We interview people from all over the world, so they can’t always make it to our Ellon HQ to speak to us in person. If not, that’s totally cool, we can use the wonders of technology to get in touch online and interview you that way! We only ask one thing to make a good impression; please make sure you can use Skype first. As much as your nostrils and teeth are great, we would really love to see your full face so we can speak properly (this does happen a lot!)"

We love two things here at BrewDog - our Beer and our People. Our recruitment process connects these two like no other part of our business. If you have what it takes to join our amazing team, check out our latest vacancies on our website. We also asked Nicolle what her favourite application ever was, and here’s what she said…

“It would be the ‘message in a bottle’ we got with a CV on USB inside. The message also said ‘if I am not successful, please refill a brew from you pilot kit and return to…’”

Brilliant and refreshing approach to doing Biz, a company that really understands that its people are its business, no starch just down to earth be who you are and do what you do best, i have applied for the MD for lone wolf, i wont sit outside and press my nose up against the glass it rains a lot, but if i dont get a chat on the role i might turn up and padlock the buildings

We need beer that doesn't knock yer block off after two pints. 3.5% is a good AV for a social drink. You drink more, enjoy it more and You sell more! I used to drink Boddingtons when it was a real beer made in Manchester. Now they've naffed off to Wales they can get stuffed and I've never touched it again. I like the Brewdog concept and the beers.

I applied for a role with you, heard nothing back, then requested feedback, and still got no response! :( I know I haven't got the role (as I spend a lot of time in the local bar and know someone else is doing it), and that's fine, but some feedback would be great. As a customer, a fan, and someone who bought Equity, it'd be really nice to have some engagement back, whether or not applicants are successful.

Scoot - Absolutely, keep an eye out for vacancies for our distillation team!

Good info.

1 - Can it be for Gin and Vodka, rather than beer, seeing as you are heading down this route? Beer is good and all, but I'm much more of a spirit drinker than a beer one.

3 - I wish more companies took note. When I wear jeans and a t-shirt I'm the same person. Wearing a dress shirt and trousers doesn't suddenly make me a different person.

Sigh........if only I could get out of the corporate ladder and into the modern world that is Brewdog.

Nitin - Hah, nice try... ;)
Nitin 21.07.2016 @ 11:34am
Do you get a beer in the interview?
Flick 21.07.2016 @ 11:09am
Hire me! I can do anything if it involves beer. :) :)
