Mash In…Mash Out…

The votes are in. We carried the boxes to the nearest church hall and counted every single one through the night, until we were absolutely sure which of the four beer styles came out on top yesterday. Day One of #MashTag 2016 looks like this, if you’d cast your eyes to the styles standing nervously on the stage:-

#MashTag 2016 Beer Style:

IPA – 40%
Saison – 26%
Porter – 24%
Brown Ale – 10%

Yes, a deluge of votes were received and it was the mighty IPA that was returned the winner. Pats on the back all round! So, here’s what will happen next, and how the rest of the week will shake itself out…

From today to Friday, we’ll post a blog each morning. The post will list four options for you to pick from – scroll down to see today's poll deciding the malt and ABV! It’s entirely up to you and your fellow BrewDog fans in which direction #MashTag 2016 proceeds. You can cast your vote on the blog using the poll or by leaving a comment, and also vote via our Facebook page, poll on our Twitter Feed or Instagram page.

Here’s what’s going down:

Monday: Beer Style – IPA
Tuesday: Malt Bill & ABV
Wednesday: Hops & IBU
Thursday: Special Twist
Friday: Label

Voting is open until 7pm each day, with the exception of Friday (when the artwork magic commences, to a longer deadline). We’ll tally up all of the votes across the different platforms each evening, and every blog post will then include the results from the day before. As the week moves ahead, the ingredients and methods involved will all be fully explained, so you can feel confident in your selection at every stage of the process. It also doubles as a chance for us to expound on our thinking behind each of the multiple options!

Ok, so let’s open the malt bill handbook and run our finger down the index of options:

Day Two: Malt Bill & ABV

How should #MashTag be #MashedIn? And how high should we go?

4.0% Oatmeal Session IPA

Malt Bill: Pale Malt, Oats, Wheat and Dextrin.

The style of the moment – nudging the abv way below the expected for the guardian of craft beer could make things tick in a very interesting manner indeed. The small amount of oats and wheat will give full body to what will be a pale golden beer with a huge amount of customisation ahead – as is typical during #MashTag week!

5.5% Vienna IPA

Malt Bill: Pale and Vienna Malt.

Adding layers of traditional continental malt to an IPA isn’t something we have done before, but the resultant deep golden beer should look a picture, as well as yielding a fantastic baseline for further adaptation. Vienna malt gives a characteristic nutty, bready aroma, opening a raft of possibilities for our 2016 #MashTag brew.

8.0% Old World Double IPA

Malt Bill: Amber and Marris Otter Malt.

Moving up in both colour and malt payload, the third potential option for our IPA is to switch in some Cara or Crystal malt. These malts, stewed fully wet to give a crystalline structure, typically produce beers that are deep orange in colour and have a resultant rich caramel sweetness that take IPA into another fascinating, old-time, direction.

10.5% Triple IPA

Malt Bill: Extra Pale Malt.

Our final option for the malt bill for our crowdsourced India Pale Ale would see us add a barely-restrained mountain of extra pale malt. Giving the beer a colossal start in life in this way will be repaid down the line with a rich, high-abv maltbuster of a beer – and one that could be added to in any one of a number of different ways over the course of the week!

We love hops, as you know (and stand by tomorrow for the score on that particular issue) – but the malt bill is the most vital component of any beer. Get it right, and the starches that are converted into sugars give the yeast a chance to make a truly great beer – whilst the backbone it provides in terms of flavour also allows the hops and other ingredients to really shine.

So, those are your four choices for the continuance of #MashTag 2016 – don’t forget you have until 7pm today to get those votes in, as that’s when the polls will close. After that, we lift the heavy wooden beam that protects our hop store and venture within. But on this second day of #MashTag 2016, it’s all about the Malt – keep your votes coming in!

TIPA, natch.

Another IPA for the brewdog collection...... Bit disappointing. I'd go oatmeal session IPA just because it can set up the beer for a great twist.

5.5% Vienna, sounds amazing

Old world IPA

Triple IPA!

Oh wow, an IPA, how exciting and unexpected... Here's to hoping whatever twist wins will actually have a bit of an impact on the beer and make it something more special.
Jon 22.03.2016 @ 3:28pm
Triple, gotta be. BD haven't brewed a TIPA since Anarchist Alchemist, about 4 years ago
anonymous 22.03.2016 @ 2:06pm
Vote Vienna !
Triple is too strong for pale beers to carry, pale beers over 8% just don't do it for me. Needs more body to match the ABV.

Woo another IPA(!)
Really hoped it would've been something more interesting.

Old world double/imperial you did before was awesome (that and the stout need to be done again).

I went Vienna, because everyone is doing session IPA (siren and wild beer so session oat pales, which are great).
Triple IPA with just extra pale malt? Just booze and hops then.

5.5% Vienna, sounds real interesting
richard booth 22.03.2016 @ 12:59pm
Would have liked a rye IPA but if it's one of these the double gets my vote
Brett 22.03.2016 @ 12:53pm
Would have liked to see the saison but since it's an IPA may as well go for the Triple
jpwarg 22.03.2016 @ 12:44pm
Well, boo! I had hoped for something else than IPA, but others decided against that :(

But let's make this the best IPA ever but with a slight twist, so Old World Double IPA is my choice.
BeerDog 22.03.2016 @ 12:31pm
Triple IPA for sure!
Rob 22.03.2016 @ 12:17pm
Go big or go home! TIPA
FragUK 22.03.2016 @ 12:14pm
Incredibly disappointed that the Porter missed out, not that I don't like a good IPA.

Might as well go big or go home, Triple IPA!
Dan Griggs 22.03.2016 @ 12:03pm
Some interesting options there I think the old world IPA sounds like it could be great, but the vienna version also looks good. And the triple ipa of course. Going to vote for the vienna I think

BrewGooder and Mashtag Day 2!!!

Triple IPA all the way
