This week we have a beer launching that is sure to draw the attention of anyone who enjoys the portfolio of Humulus lupulus. Yes, our third Ace of Hops release is live now in our online shop, and is a beer that revolves entirely around the flavour profile of a single varietal – one that has captured the attention of a whole new generation of hopheads.

Few hops have had an impact over recent years like this particular hop. Bursting with a frenzy of citrus, it’s no surprise. Citra is a hop that has gained a huge fanbase in the craft brewing and home-brewing communities, so when we were dialling in our four different single-hopped beers for Ace of Hops, including it in the ranks was a no-brainer!

Following on from Aces of Simcoe and Chinook, this third release in the series is similarly a session IPA, brewed at 4.5% and showcasing the flavour profile of the hop in its entirety. Ace of Citra is a thunderbolt of grapefruit, orange and lime zest, with a supporting layer of dark berries at the far edges of the taste. Whereas Chinook hit the piney heights, Citra is all about pithy fruit.

As a hop, Citra was only released in 2007 – it seems like much longer ago that that – and rushed to prominence in the dry-hopping procedure used for Sierra Nevada Torpedo IPA. Its unabashed citrus flavour is a perfect addition for pale ales and IPA’s, and in our session-strength version it is allowed to reflect that profile due to the dry, biscuity baseline from the malt bill.

Ace of Citra is live in our online shop now and will be released on draft across our network of UK BrewDog bars from 6pm tonight, Thursday 18th August. For those wishing to play along at home (or while away a train journey or camping trip), our Ace of Hops series has been made literal with an epic set of playing cards which you can also pick up in our online shop.
