SLOT MACHINE

SLOT MACHINE

There’s no escaping the fact that the weather is taking a turn from warmer to cooler as we reach mid-September. To bridge the gap between summer and the dark months of stout and porter drinking we have come up with the perfect beer. Our last BrewDog seasonal for 2017 is a red rye India Pale Ale that perfectly encapsulates the change in seasons. Slot Machine is out now.

Our quartet of seasonal releases began at the turn of the year with Zeitgeist, and now we have another malt-led beer acting as a perfect bookend. With Hop Fiction and Electric India laying down the hops over the summer, we round out the foursome with a beer that not only brings citrus and spice from the new world hops – but balances them with a robust and complementary malt bill.

Slot Machine is 5.2% ABV and packs a bitterness of 55 IBU from being kettle hopped with Magnum, but also a hit of citrus from Amarillo in the whirlpool and dry-hop. We have also added a third wave; the herbal spice from German hop Callista bringing a nobility to the proceedings. Added with the Amarillo, this new hop (it was first released in 2016) also gives a berry fruit and gooseberry character, so Slot Machine has a series of interlinked hop flavours to unravel!

The beer was also brewed with Pale, Carafa and Crystal malt to give notes of caramel, toffee and bread crust as a baseline, and then layered in we added a generous addition of rye. We love brewing with this ingredient, despite the potential it has to make brewers think twice. In Slot Machine it adds a depth of spice to go with the hops and balance out the caramel from the Crystal malt. In short, as any brewer will tell you, rye holds everything together.

Deaf Mermaid

Also launching soon is the return of a beer that lovers of hops can use to ward off the advances of that colder weather for just a little longer. First released two years ago, Deaf Mermaid is a small-batch draft only pale ale that fires with Chinook, Citra and Mosaic. With peaks of citrus peel and ripe tropical fruit we have tweaked this beer to be as flavoursome as possible, and to deliver the perfect hit of juicy hopload as summer just about still remains visible in the rear-view mirror.

As with our previous seasonals, we have packaged Slot Machine in 330ml cans and 660ml bottles. These bombers are a perfect size to share, and the cans ideal for transporting and cooling faster. We are also launching on draft as well of course – you can find Slot Machine pouring from the taps of our UK Bars from 6pm tonight, Thursday September 21st. And check you local bar for when Deaf Mermaid arrives on tap!

As ever, if you get a chance to sample them, leave your tasting notes in the comments below!

Looking forward to this, big fan of rye beers. Any chance this one will be in Tesco stores like Hop Fiction and Electric India were? Be good to be able to easily pick up a few more within the next few months.
