THREE BEER THURSDAY
“Full Metal Jacket” - not just one of Kubrick’s best known cinematic productions, but also an epithet we often apply to our preferred packaging method for transporting fresh, hoppy IPA from bright beer tank to your fridge at home. We love the advantages of packaging our beer in aluminium; it eliminates light-strike, it chills faster, it’s better for the environment, and prevents the ingress of oxygen better than a crown cap.
This week sees the release of three beers, all clad fully in metal. Nanny State, our 0.5% ABV hoppy ale, makes the leap to cans, as does Jet Black Heart, our vanilla milk stout. And with them, Clockwork Tangerine, our new citrus session IPA.
Following hot on the heels of the exiting Zeitgeist, our next 2018 Seasonal beer takes its place in our core line-up, having been crowned victor of the 2017 Prototype Challenge. This brew packs a citrus punch on a par with Elvis Juice, but clocking in at just 4.5%, this session strength IPA dials down the ABV and ratchets up the pithy bitterness. Explosive aromas of tangerine and mandarin meld seamlessly with notes of grapefruit and lime, courtesy of USA hop-heavyweights Simcoe and Citra. The palate is light and dry; malt plays second fiddle to flavours of orange peel and pine. Each sip rises and falls, with intense flavour building, and the light finish leaving you ready for more.
Our new Seasonal beer is available now, in both 330ml can and 660ml bomber (for those prepared to share their beer), as well as on draft in all BrewDog bars.
Not a new beer, but a beer that has been crying out to be canned nevertheless. Our 0.5% ABV brew is the perfect choice for the IPA-inclined, when seeking intense hop character without the alcohol. Cleverly brewed to cram in as much malt flavour as possible without giving our hungry yeast any sugar to ferment, Nanny State doesn’t rely on the usual methods employed by macro breweries to remove alcohol from their bog-standard offerings. Hopped as heavily as any of our Headliner range, Nanny State features Simcoe, Cascade, Ahtanum, Amarillo, Centennial and Columbus. We created this beer from the ground up, and are stoked to finally put it in the packaging its hop profile deserves.
Nanny State is also available now.
JET BLACK HEART
Lastly, a beer that like Nanny State isn’t new, but now features a twist making its canned incarnation one of the most exciting things we’ll do in 2018!
Jet Black Heart is a vanilla milk stout – brewed to be smooth as hell, we use wheat and oats in the mash (adding to the body) as well as milk sugar to add sweetness that makes it through fermentation into the final beer. Dark malts combine with the addition of vanilla to bring flavours of chocolate milkshake and iced mocha, giving way to decadent cocoa, rich fruity coffee, and cinder toffee.
By canning Jet Black Heart, it allows us to put our new kit to use, and infuse every can with nitrogen – we already use this well-established technique with our draft Jet Black Heart, and those who have tried it have been practically beating down our door to see it available in individual serve sized containers.
By turning the cans over a few times, then pouring the beer hard into a pint glass (being careful when opening of course!), the nitrogen bubbles are released from solution, and these tiny pockets rise up and create the distinctive cascading head which has become the hallmark of the style. The bubbles, being much smaller than CO2 bubbles, create a smoother texture and enhance the sweet characteristics of the beer – bitter chocolate becomes milk chocolate, espresso becomes mocha, and so on.
Jet Black Heart in nitro cans is – all together now – available now!
We’re mega excited to be bringing you this trinity of canned beers, so be sure to let us know what you think of them in the comments. Want to see any of our other beers encased in cold steel*? Let us know!
